Sad news from Washington, DC, of our dear friend Madeleine K. Albright's death, reached us yesterday.
Madeleine was the first woman to head US diplomacy, playing a significant role in the first expansion of NATO to include former Eastern Bloc members, including the Czech Republic, and was instrumental in shaping democracy after 1989 in what was then Czechoslovakia. She was a courageous and educated lady who was always committed to women's equality in society and inspired many women to achieve their ambitions without inhibition.
"Her passing is a huge loss for all her loved ones and for everyone in the world who shared common values. Despite being a towering figure in US and global politics, she remained a proud Czech who fought tirelessly for democracy and freedom."
"We were honoured to have shared a great friendship with Madeleine, a common worldview and projects of building the legacy of Václav Havel and the development of the Central European branch of the Aspen Institute. We extend our sincere condolences to her family."
