Bakala Foundation supports talents in the Science Program at Charles University

October 9, 2024
The Bakala Foundation will newly support students of the interdisciplinary Bachelor's Science Program which has been running for the third year at the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University.
As part of this collaboration, scholarships will be awarded to four students, each receiving financial support covering their annual tuition fees. This unique Science program, taught in English, is designed for exceptionally talented students from around the world and is the only program of its kind in the Czech Republic.
The Science program draws inspiration from the Western educational model, similar to the Natural Sciences program at the University of Cambridge. It integrates three core scientific disciplines—biology, chemistry, and physics—closely interconnected with mathematics and computer science. This unique multidisciplinary approach allows students to develop deep knowledge and excel in addressing the scientific challenges of the future.
"The world is changing, and we strive to prepare successful scientists who will respond to today's new challenges. The goal of our program is to create a small Czech Cambridge in Prague," stated one of the program's founders, renowned immunologist and science popularizer Professor Jan Černý.

"The Science program is unparalleled in the Czech Republic, and we are very pleased to support four students with a stipend of 60,000 CZK covering the annual tuition. The interdisciplinary scope that the graduates will acquire, which is emphasized at the world's most prestigious universities, is also, in our view, the key to success in science," said Václav Pecha, Director of the Bakala Foundation.
The high quality of education is ensured by the limited capacity of the program, which is open to a maximum of 30 students per year, guaranteeing an individual approach and high-quality teaching. Although it is a relatively new program, it has already been attracting considerable interest from talented students and scientific experts not only from the Czech Republic but also from abroad. Graduates have wide-ranging opportunities in academic and scientific fields worldwide.
The Bakala Foundation, a family foundation established by Michaela and Zdeněk Bakala, shares more than just values with this new inter-university project. Renowned molecular biologist Lukáš Čermák is one of the experts on the selection committee responsible for choosing finalists in the Foundation's Scholarship program.
